News Review: Mortgage Brokers: Why Humans Still Beat AI

Table of Contents

The world of mortgages continues to evolve, but one constant remains clear: the invaluable role of a mortgage broker. Recent findings from Santander’s latest Broker Perception Barometer highlight just how crucial human expertise is for navigating the property market.

According to the survey, as reported by Mortgage Introducer, borrowers overwhelmingly rely on brokers for their mortgage journey:

  • Indispensable Guidance: Nearly two-thirds (60%) of mortgage customers state they couldn’t complete a home purchase or remortgage without a broker. This sentiment has remained consistent over the last three quarters, showing a deep-seated reliance.

  • Security and Confidence: A significant 84% of borrowers feel a sense of security with a broker, while 73% report increased confidence in their financial decisions. This highlights the emotional and practical support brokers provide in a complex market.

  • Real Savings: On average, borrowers using a broker saved £136 on monthly payments, a figure that has grown and underscores the tangible financial benefits of professional advice.

  • Human Preference: When faced with a mortgage concern, only a small fraction of borrowers would turn to AI tools (5%) or social media (8%), with the vast majority preferring their broker (29%) as their first point of contact. This clearly indicates a strong preference for human, expert advice over automated or informal channels.

Santander’s survey also noted that despite distractions like major sporting events, borrowers still expect their brokers to be readily available for advice, showing the high regard in which the profession is held.

Looking Ahead

These insights underscore that in a complex and sometimes volatile market, the trusted, personal advice offered by mortgage brokers is not just preferred, but truly indispensable. As technology advances, the demand for expert human guidance in significant financial decisions like mortgages only strengthens, cementing the broker’s role for the foreseeable future.
